What is this course about?
The introduction of the higher capitation for Early Childhood services that operate the free pre-school year has resulted in an increased demand for qualified staff to meet the equirements. In order to obtain higher capitation from the Department of Children & Youth Affairs a service must be able to show that all the required Pre-school Leaders in the service hold a major award at level 7 on the NFQ or equivalent in childhood / early education and have at least 3 years’ experience in the childcare sector . Ongoing professional development must be at the heart of any organisation or sector , but especially in the Early Year’ s sector .
This level 7 award will incentivise the sector to continue to up skill and in doing so provide real change for the sector and for children. Candidates with a full Level 6 award in Super visor y Childcare and a minimum of 3 years full-time practice experience are eligible to apply.The overall aim of the programme is to provide an academic and professional qualification in Early Childhood Education and Care.
The programme will equip students with the knowledge, understanding and competencies required to provide care and education for young children (0-6 years), in a range of early years settings.
The general aim is to develop early childhood professionals who have a specific expertise and a specialised knowledge base, competent to deliver and manage quality services to children and families. All successful applicants will be have to complete 500 hours of Supervised Professional Practice as part of this programme. The programme aims to educate students to the level of ‘Experienced Practitioner’ as defined by the Model Framework (2002).
What are the minimum entry requirements?
To be eligible for consideration for this BA in Applied Early Childhood Education & Care, applicants must hold a minimum full FETAC Level 6 qualification in childcare and have at least 3 years full-time practice experience. All applicants will be considered on a case by case basis. Lifelong learning reserves the right to require applicants to attend for an interview to determine their suitability for the programme
